Terms of reference

The project terms of reference were to advise and assist the company on a one-to-one basis to implement an ISO 9002 and BAFE QSP 94001 compliant quality management system. The project involved 10½ consultancy days. 

Project aims and objectives

The objective of the project was to achieve ISO 9002 registration with an accredited certification body within 6 months of starting the project.

The organisation

Fire Queen employs around 12 staff and specifies, installs and maintains fire extinguishers.

Process of delivery of the ISO 9002 project

The project started in November 1998. Firequeen staff were helped by Hawkstone Consulting Ltd. with the following elements of their quality system:-

bullet

review of current systems and the identification of changes to meet the requirements of ISO 9002

bullet

the development of the policy manual

bullet

the production of the procedures (10 off) and operating instructions (4 off)

bullet

creation of some new quality records, the indexing of all the records and production of a records index

bullet

internal audit training and implementation, including the provision of internal auditor certificates

bullet

selection of an accredited certification body (LPC)

bullet

amendments to documentation and systems as a result of the LPC document review (carried out in September 1999

bullet

preparation for and attendance at the management review meeting

In addition, Hawkstone Consulting completed several audits prior to the formal assessment.

The project was funded by Business Link Stockport.

The outcomes

Firequeen achieved ISO 9002/ BAFE QSP 94001 in December 1999, 13 months after starting the project, with around 10 minor non compliances. The project was delayed by Firequeen’s own choice, in order that they could cope with ever increasing sales. In achieving ISO 9002, they have developed a practical quality system with a minimum of paperwork and bureaucracy.  They will now be able to market themselves with ISO 9002 registration, a fact that should ultimately increase sales. Quality problems and complaints are now being formally recorded and objectives have been set at the management review for quality improvement.
